Since medical school, I have been a fan of medical handbooks. I like their feel—durable, portable, and readily available. I like the idea they convey,providing expert information boiled down to its essence, yet reliable and
proven in the fi eld. A good handbook becomes essential to its user. Its pages become well-thumbed. Its spine acquires a structural memory,opening easily to frequently consulted chapters that correspond to real
patient-care experiences at the bedside and offi ce. In creating the Oxford American Handbook of Geriatric Medicine , I believe that the publisher and authors have succeeded admirably in creating just such a resource.
Collectively, the authors, all colleagues with whom I’ve worked, have amassed centuries of experience taking care of older adults and thinking about aging. Their expertise comes through clearly.However, there is something subtler that I have challenged the authors to convey and I hope the reader detects. That is one of tone. The art of geriatric medicine requires competent knowledge and diagnostic skill,certainly, but as much as any specialty, perhaps even more so, it requires agentle professional temperament, one that is imbued with patience,humility, and wisdom. These are characteristics of the seasoned geriatrician,but are within the grasp of the physician-in-training: patience to listen and be present for the patient; humility to know the limits of scientific and personal knowledge and to respect the patient’s self-knowledge; and
wisdom to balance competing priorities and see the patient as an individual with unique needs and perspective.This Handbook is intended to be wedded to these attributes and refreshed by reflection on experience. Virginia Commonwealth University, Inova Campus and Affiliate Professor of
Biomedical Sciences at George Mason University. Dr. Younossi has authored
more than 150 articles and presented more than 150 abstracts at international
meetings. He sits on multiple local and national committees and has served on
the editorial boards of Hepatology and World Journal of Gastroenterology and as
an associate editor of Liver International and Evidence-Based Gastroenterology.
Over the past decade, Dr. Younossi has been actively involved with the American
Liver Foundation. He is a member of the American Association for the Study
of Liver Disease, American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological
Association.

Neuroprotection comprises a broad range of therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing
death of neurons in trauma or disease. As applied to ocular disorders,
neuroprotection has received enormous attention in past years because of its potential
for treating diseases that were heretofore untreatable or difficult to treat,
including disorders primarily involving death of photoreceptors (such as in macular
degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and retinal detachment) or retinal ganglion
cells (such as in glaucoma).
The goal of this book is to provide the reader with up-to-date ocular neuroprotection
research methods that are used in leading laboratories worldwide.
Chapters 1 through 15 focus on research methods at the laboratory level, with
emphasis on various cell culture and animal models, classes of neuroprotective
drugs, biochemical and cellular outcome measures, and applicability to human
disease. Chapters 16 through 18 focus on how clinical trials of neuroprotection
may be carried out, concentrating on issues of recruitment, outcome measures,
and requirements of regulatory agencies.
The information conveyed in this book is intended to be practical. The
chapters address the nuts and bolts of the actual methods themselves, along with
potential problems, solutions to those problems, potential shortcuts (and contraindications
to shortcuts), and specific suppliers, where appropriate. The book is
not intended to be an exhaustive presentation of research data or theories, but
rather to provide a focused description of useful methods for conducting neuroprotection
research.
This book will acquaint those considering research in the area with the
major techniques, tools, and issues in ocular neuroprotection, while investigators
with experience in neuroprotection research may benefit from exposure to new
models, methodologies, and clinical approaches. Regardless of the reader’s experience,
this volume will be an invaluable resource
